This award recognizes the many hours of service provided by Student Councils across our state to their school communities. So how do you calculate the numbers of community service hours from each school? Actually, all you have to do is calculate the number of students in a club or organization and multiply that by the number of community hours per student. Applications are posted on our website in late February and must be submitted by the end of April to be considered.

Named after the first NJASC Executive Director, Freda Marden, this award program was begun in 2009 for retiring advisors with 25 or more years of service. Mrs. Marden, a teacher and Student Council advisor at New Brunswick High School, served NJASC from 1927-1963 and remains the longest serving Executive Director of our association to this day.

CLICK HERE to learn more about Freda Marden and the eighty-year plus history of NJASC, the oldest continually operating state Student Council association in the United States.

If you are an advisor who will be retiring and has attained 25 or more years of service AS AN ADVISOR, please contact Executive Director Lou Miller at lmiller@njasc.org prior to April 1 of the year in which you will retire.

Standards of Excellence is a prestigious program that the NJASC and New Jersey State Board of Education initiated over thirty years ago to encourage students to operate effectively and to reward those schools who are truly outstanding! The Standards of Excellence Award is open to any NJASC member school between grades 6-12. However, you can only receive this award once every 5 years.

Each Student Council will be evaluated on not only its current activities, but also on the guidelines for administration of the council and its effective operation. Schools participating will evaluate other schools involved and score the school (refer to guideline sheet) based on the criteria in the packet. A total talley will be counted for the points awarded. The NJASC members will determine the necessary number of points necessary to receive the award.

  • Interested schools must attend an informational session at the Fall Business Meeting in October
  • Applications to participate due in late November (to Executive Member, Special Projects)
  • Visitation and evaluation process completed January to March
  • Completed evaluation materials must be returned by April 1, 2014 (to the Executive Member in charge of Special Projects), and are reviewed by the State Officers at their April Executive meeting.
  • Awards are presented at the Spring Awards Program in May

For more information:

  • CLICK HERE to view N.J. Department of Treasury publication LFN 2004-17, which covers "Business Regulation of Public Contractors"
  • CLICK HERE to view their published instructions for contracting agencies and business organizations covered by P.L. 2004 c. 57.
  • CLICK HERE to visit the Frequently Asked Questions page at their website, which has this (section 8) and other facts concerning Business Registration of Public Contractors in our state.

For your convenience, we are keeping active the link to our Business Registration Certificate, as we anticipate it will take some time before School Business Administrators become fully aware of these facts and thus recognize that in many cases this certificate is not really required.
