NJASC Advisors Update - February 9, 2009

Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events...

Our new State Officers get to work!

On Friday February 6, the 2008 State Officers met one last time at Allentown High School to conclude their work at the annual NJASC Executive Changeover meeting. We would like to personally thank each of these nine student leaders and their advisors for all they have done over the past year to support student leadership throughout our state.

In their final official act, the 2008 Board voted outgoing Vice President Leslie Pinero onto the NJASC Board of Trustees to serve a one-year term, replacing 2007 State Officer Annie Valentine who served in this capacity last year. You can CLICK HERE to view our Board of Trustees and Bylaws of Incorporation.

We wish each of our 2008 State Officers well in their future endeavors, and look forward to seeing them again at the 2009 NJASC Spring Awards Program at Six Flags Great Adventure this coming May. For more information about this event, read on...

Meanwhile, the 2009 State Officers have officially begun their work. Having selected the theme "New Jersey is HERE - Helping Everyone Reach Expectations", they are now preparing to lead NJASC for the next twelve months, and we look forward to working with this dynamic group of student leaders. Their bios and updated pictures are now posted on the NJASC website at www.njasc.org.

Thursday May 7 - reserve the date!

The 2009 NJASC Spring Awards Program will be Thursday May 7, at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson. Each year over five thousand students and advisors join us to recognize excellence in Student Council programs, outstanding community service, and donations to the NJASC State Charity.

Awards that will be given at this program will include:

  • Standards of Excellence - schools involved in this program are currently working with each other to evaluate each other and share ideas to improve their Student Council programs.
  • Community Smile - the application form for this award will be posted in March. Be sure to download the form and complete it to have your Student Council recognized for the service it provides to your school and local community.
  • State Charity Awards - there will be awards for the $1000, $2000, $5000, and $10,000 Club as well as the top three donations by middle and high schools to our 2008-2009 State Charity, "P.O.A.C."

For this event, we will be introducing Online Registration for the first time! The online registration form will be posted at www.njasc.org in mid-March, with a link provided to access it directly from our home page. You will be able to enter all necessary registration information directly onto this form, submit it online, and then printout an e-mail confirmation that you can send to your business office for processing payment.

Our eventual plan is to expand online registration to include the Fall and Winter Conferences, starting next year. We are currently working on making the transition to registering online as simple and painless as possible for you and your school. Stay tuned for more information about the Spring Awards program...

Join us at the 2009 NASC National Conference!

We are now taking reservations and deposits for the 2009 NASC National Conference, which will be held at Highlands Ranch HS in Denver, Colorado this coming June.  Nearly two thousand students and advisors will come together from all fifty states as well as Canada and Puerto Rico to share a leadership experience that promises to be invigorating, exciting, and unique.

The 2009 State Officers will lead our NJASC delegation to Colorado, and we are inviting you to join them (and us) for this trip! We will have a pre-trip dinner and get together at Bordentown Regional High School on Thursday evening June 25, and then will fly from Philadephia International Airport out to Denver the following morning. That evening, we will join the Pennsylvania delegation for a joint activity to meet new people and get in the spirit for the conference.

The four-day NASC National Conference offers the opportunity to meet and network with other leaders from across the United States, obtain new ideas from informative speakers and workshops, and ascertain innovative ideas about service learning. Participants will come away with renewed enthusiasm for student council involvement at their schools, new projects and ideas to implement, thereby developing stronger leadership skills and friendships.

After the conference ends, our delegation will enjoy a final night of fun and games at Dave & Buster's in Denver. After a final delegation breakfast, we will fly home on Wednesday July 1, arriving at Philadelphia International Airport in the early evening.

The per person cost including airfare, hotel, meals, shirts/pins, and NASC conference registration will be $1475.00 for students and $1595.00 for advisors. Please note that any student who is not a State Officer must be accompanied by their advisor or another adult faculty member from their school.

At this time we are asking anyone interested in attending to please e-mail Lou at lmiller@njasc.org with their intent by February 28. A $400.00 deposit per person is due to Lou at the Northern Office by March 15, 2009. If you have any further questions about our trip to the 2009 NASC National Conference, please contact Lou at the above e-mail address.

Get your student leaders energized at LTC 2009!

The 54th annual NJASC Leadership Training Conference (LTC) will be at The College of New Jersey - Session 1 from (Wed-Sat.) July 15-18 and Session 2 from (Sun-Wed.) July 19-22.

In four days and three nights, your student leaders will discover, develop, and demonstrate their leadership potential and have a great time doing it. Delegates to LTC 2009 will benefit from the diverse personal and professional experience of our senior staff as well as from an energetic junior staff that will motivate and inspire them to discover the leader inside. The lessons learned at LTC last a lifetime, and your students will come back energized to positively impact your student council and school.

For those high school students that already attended LTC - there is now the opportunity to come back for more! Preparations are underway by LTC Educational Director Pam Freund and the LTC Education Committee to develop and implement the new curriculum for the LTC 2 program, which will take place during Session 2 of LTC from July 19-22. This "conference within a conference" will incorporate the social aspects of LTC that excite and motivate delegates into an advanced curriculum that will prepare your student leaders to take charge in school and beyond!

The registration cost for LTC or LTC 2 is only $350.00 per delegate - which includes lodging, meals, and all course materials. Be sure to reserve places at LTC (and LTC 2, too) for your school as soon as possible, so your student leaders don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience! Deposit and Space Reservation forms for both programs are now available on the Forms Page of the NJASC Website, and Delegate Registration Forms will be posted there soon!

You can CLICK HERE to view testimonials from student leaders that attended LTC 2008 last summer. For more information, be sure to visit the LTC Section of the NJASC Website.

As always we would like to thank you for your support of the NJASC and student leaders throughout New Jersey.
