NJASC Advisors Update - March 5, 2009

Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events...

Spring Awards Program Registration OPEN!

Registration is now open for the 2009 NJASC Spring Awards Program, which will be on Thursday May 7 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson. Join over five thousand students and advisors to recognize excellence in Student Council programs, outstanding community service, and donations to the NJASC State Charity.

Awards that will be given at this program include:

  • Standards of Excellence - schools involved in this program are currently working to evaluate each other and share ideas to improve their Student Council programs.
  • Community Smile - CLICK HERE to download a 2009 Community Smile award application form and complete it to have your Student Council recognized for the valuable service it provides to your school and local community.
  • State Charity Awards - CLICK HERE to download a 2009 State Charity donation form. This is a new form designed to accompany your check or purchase order. As in past years, there will be awards for the $1000, $2000, $5000, and $10,000 Club as well as the top three donations by middle and high schools to our 2008-2009 State Charity, "P.O.A.C." If you have already sent in your State Charity donation, you DO NOT need to send in this form.

This year, we are using ONLINE REGISTRATION for this event - so there will not be a paper form to download and print out. Here is how it works...

  • Click on the link provided below or visit www.njasc.org to use the link on the left sidebar of the homepage to access our Online Registration Form. We will also have a link on our Download Forms page to access this online form.
  • Enter the school name, primary advisor name, and the correct primary advisor e-mail address. Please be sure to CAREFULLY enter the correct e-mail address, since this where the confirmation e-mail will be sent.
  • Enter the number of student registrations ($30.00 each) and student lunches ($15.00 each) for your school. There is also a field to enter the number of students that have Six Flags season passes ($5.00 each).
  • Enter the number of advisors ($15.00 each, 1 for every 10 students at this price) from your school, as well as any additional advisors above this ratio (at $45.00 each).
  • You will have to calculate the total amount due to NJASC and enter it into the online form.
  • If known, please enter the name of each advisor that will be attending. DO NOT re-enter the name of the primary advisor. This will be for our professional development records.
  • Click on the SUBMIT button once. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you which contains all information entered into the online form.
  • Print out the confirmation e-mail, submit it to your Business Office to process payment, and have them mail payment to the NJASC Southern Office (address given on the confirmation e-mail).

For high school students that have already been to LTC and just have to get more, there is the new LTC 2 program that will run during Session 2 (July 19-22). Delegates to this new "conference within a conference" will enjoy the same high quality social program while taking advanced classes that will prepare them for advanced leadership as high school upperclassmen and beyond. Please note that in order to attend LTC 2 a student must be at least a High School Sophomore in September 2009.

The registration cost for LTC (or LTC 2) is only $350.00 per delegate - which includes lodging, meals, and all course materials. Be sure to reserve places at LTC (and LTC 2, too) for your school as soon as possible, so your student leaders don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience! Time is running out to join us in Denver!

We are still taking reservations and deposits for the 2009 NASC National Conference, which will be held at Highlands Ranch HS in Denver, Colorado this coming June.  Nearly two thousand students and advisors will come together from all fifty states as well as Canada and Puerto Rico to share a leadership experience that promises to be invigorating, exciting, and unique.

The NASC National Conference offers the opportunity to meet and network with other leaders from across the United States, obtain new ideas from informative speakers and workshops, and ascertain innovative ideas about service learning. Participants will come away with renewed enthusiasm for student council involvement at their schools, new projects and ideas to implement, thereby developing stronger leadership skills and friendships.

CLICK HERE to visit our Nationals page, where you can find more information as well as a tentative trip itinerary. The per person cost including airfare, hotel, meals, shirts/pins, and NASC conference registration is $1475.00 per student and $1595.00 per advisors. Please note that any student who is not a State Officer must be accompanied by their advisor or another adult faculty member from their school.

At this time we are asking anyone interested in attending to please e-mail Lou at lmiller@njasc.org with their intent by Monday March 16. A $400.00 deposit per person is due to Lou at the Northern Office (Brooklawn Middle School) as soon as possible. If you have any further questions about our trip to the NASC National Conference, please contact Lou at the above e-mail address.

An important reminder about your P.I.P.

As you may know, NJASC is registered with the New Jersey Department of Education as a Professional Development (PD) provider. At each of our conferences we offer either 2 or 3 hours to each advisor in attendance. At the upcoming Spring Awards Program there will be two one-hour professional development sessions available in the afternoon, following lunch.

To ensure that your district will accept PD hours earned through NJASC toward the 100 hour requirement that each of us has to attain every five years, you should be sure to incorporate a statement regarding advisement of student leadership into your Professional Improvement Plan (P.I.P.) each year.

To help you out, CLICK HERE to view a sample P.I.P. that was used by Lou in his district. Some districts may require you to submit our New Jersey State Professional Development registration number - which is 6012. We sincerely hope that participation in NJASC activities will assist you in reaching your professional development goals.

As always we would like to thank you for your support of the NJASC and student leaders throughout New Jersey.
