NJASC Advisors Update - May 8, 2009

Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events...

It was a great day at the park!

On Thursday May 7, nearly 5000 student leaders and their faculty advisors joined us at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township for the 2009 NJASC Spring Awards Program. The sometimes rainy weather could not stop our recognition of the many achievements of student leaders and their Student Councils from all over the Garden State...

STATE CHARITY:
In the past year, Student Councils from throughout New Jersey raised a total of $153,275 for the 2008-2009 State Charity, "P.O.A.C. - Parents of Autistic Children". The check presentation by members of the 2008 and 2009 NJASC Executive Boards is shown below.

The new State Charity for 2009-2010 was also introduced - we look forward to working with the "Family Reach Foundation" in the next 12 months, and we are confident that the student leaders of our state will work just as hard for this worthy organization as they did for "P.O.A.C." COMMUNITY SMILE:
A total of 41 schools were recognized for the many hours of community service provided by their students throughout the year. CLICK HERE to view a list of these award-winning Student Councils.

STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE:
The most difficult and prestigious award presented by NJASC went to two schools - Brooklawn Middle School and Ocean City High School. Over the past year, these two schools conducted a detailed self-evaluation of their own programs. After this, they conducted site visits to share ideas and complete a thorough formal evaluation of each other's programs. This award can be won only once every five years. We congratulate the students and advisors of Brooklawn and Ocean City, pictured below shortly after receiving this honor.

FREDA MARDEN AWARD:
The first presentation of this new award kicks off our new program of Advisor Service Recognition. Named after the first NJASC Executive Director, Mrs. Freda Marden, this award will recognize advisors who have at least 25 years of service and are retiring. Mrs. Marden served the NJASC as its' first adult leader from 1927-1963, and the students of New Brunswick High School as their Student Council advisor for an even longer period of time - both with class and distinction.

The first recipient of this award is Mr. Michael Nolan of Bordentown Regional High School, who is pictured below with current NJASC Executive Directors Lou Miller and Wendy Booth Sitzler moments after being totally surprised with this special honor...

We would like to congratulate all schools that won awards at this year's Spring Awards Program, for a job well done! We would also like to encourage all Student Councils in our state to participate in one or more of the many NJASC award programs in the coming year, and gain the recognition they so richly deserve at the state level!

But wait...there's more!

We would also like to recognize and congratulate five schools in our state that have been awarded a National Gold Council of Excellence designation for 2009. This award program is sponsored by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), of which NJASC is the recognized New Jersey state affiliate.

Since 2006, this NASC program has recognized outstanding Student Council programs for their exemplary efforts at the local, state, and national levels to build student leaders while improving their schools and communities through leadership, service, and activities. To meet the requirements for this award, a Student Council must demonstrate that it has met a variety of criteria. Those councils that meet an even greater number of criteria are designated as "Gold" Councils of Excellence.

We salute the following five New Jersey Student Councils for attaining the National Gold Council of Excellence award in 2009, and in some cases for also attaining this status in years prior:

  • Bordentown Regional High School - 2008, 2009
  • Brooklawn Middle School - 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
  • Cherokee High School - 2009
  • Hilltop Country Day School - 2009
  • Neptune High School - 2009

If your school is interested in this program, the application deadline for the 2010 National Council of Excellence award is February 15, 2010. You can find much more information about this and other NASC programs at www.nasc.us.

While you're at it, don't forget about our own NJASC Standards of Excellence program! While it is the most prestigious (and difficult to achieve) award given by NJASC, participation in this program is also the most rewarding. You will learn much about your own Student Council while getting the opportunity to evaluate and exchange ideas with another Student Council in our state! There will be a workshop at the NJASC Fall Business Meeting in October for any Student Councils interested in signing up for the 2009-2010 Standards of Excellence program.

Did your students register for LTC yet?

Now that the Spring Awards Program is behind us, it is time to start thinking about summer. You know what that means for student leaders...LTC is coming soon!

The 54th annual NJASC Leadership Training Conference (LTC) will be at The College of New Jersey - Session 1 from (Wed-Sat.) July 15-18 and Session 2 from (Sun-Wed.) July 19-22.

It is NOT too late to get your student leaders involved in this one-of-a-kind experience! We still have room in both sessions, and there will be open enrollment throughout May and June. We also have spaces available in the brand new "LTC 2" program, that will prepare student leaders that have already attended LTC for advanced leadership as high school upperclassmen and beyond.

To learn more about the magic of LTC, CLICK HERE to view testimonials from student leaders that attended LTC 2008 last summer or visit the LTC Section of our website. Once you are convinced that LTC is the place to be for your student leaders, you can use one of the links below to get a Delegate Registration Form...
