NJASC Advisors Update - September 10, 2009

Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events...

Welcome Back! What a summer it was...

We hope that you had a great summer! For NJASC, the summer of 2009 was full of great experiences for the student leaders of our state...

From June 25-July 1, our State Officers led a delegation of twenty-four student leaders and advisors to the 73rd annual NASC National Conference at Highlands Ranch High School in Denver, Colorado. At NASC 2009 over 1500 student leaders and their advisors networked to share ideas, enjoyed nationally recognized speakers, and engaged in activities designed to develop and enhance their leadership skills. The student leaders of New Jersey definitely left their mark on this conference, and made friends with fellow leaders from throughout North America (and one moose)...

One of the keynote speakers at NASC 2009 was Alvin Law - who motivated all with his unique life story and experiences. Our State Officers were especially impressed by his story and presentation, and asked about having him share it with each of you. We are proud to be bringing Alvin all the way from Alberta, Canada to New Jersey this coming January to speak at our 2010 Winter Convention. We are confident that you will thoroughly enjoy Alvin's presentation, while taking home a message that you will definitely remember. You can find out more about Alvin at his website, located at www.alvinlaw.com.

From July 15-22, nearly three hundred student leaders from all parts of New Jersey attended the 54th annual NJASC Leadership Training Conference (LTC) at The College of New Jersey. At LTC, your student leaders developed and enhanced important skills such as public speaking, communication, project planning, running meetings, tolerance, handling conflict, problem solving, time management, and teamwork. Not to mention that they had the time of their life while doing all this. We'll let them speak for themselves, visit the LTC Delegate Testimonials page to hear what they had to say...

This year, we were proud to introduce our new "LTC 2" program which invited student leaders that already attended LTC to come back for more! Twenty-two student leaders took part in the initial year of this program, in which they recaptured the excitement of their first LTC experience while receving advanced leadership training to apply in high school and beyond. They also bonded tightly as a unit - within 24 hours, they had their own Facebook group up and were already planning a reunion on their own. We are working on follow-up activities for this initial LTC 2 group at the Fall and Winter Conferences, and look forward to continuing this program at LTC 2010!

Prepare for NJASC Award Programs NOW!

Each Fall, there are a number of NJASC Award Programs through which your school and student leaders can receive recognition at the state level...

NJASC award programs are designed to recognize excellence in student leadership, outstanding projects, and meeting state or nationally recognized criteria with regard to overall council operations.

As we enter this new school year, we encourage all Student Councils to carefully review the criteria and submit an application for each of these award programs. The application period for several of these programs - for which award plaques or certificates will be given at the Winter Convention - will soon begin. Therefore, now is the time to prepare your Student Council for...

  • Honor School - honors those Student Councils that have attained state and/or nationally recognized criteria with regard to overall council operations.
  • Top Ten Projects - recognizes outstanding projects in the following categories: Educational, Fundraising, Service, School Spirit, Middle Level.
  • Middle Level Student Leader of the Year - recognizes an outstanding student leader at the middle school level.
  • High School Student Leader of the Year - recognizes an outstanding student leader at the high school level.

Applications for each of these award programs will be included in your school packet at the Fall Business Meeting, and will also be available for download from our website www.njasc.org starting on Wednesday October 14. When submitting applications, please be sure to adhere to all stated deadlines - as the State Officers will not consider any applications submitted late.

Our annual mailing should arrive at your schools around September 15, and it will contain a new and exciting brochure about the benefits of LTC and NJASC membership! Thank you for your support in the past, and we look forward to working with you and your student leaders in the coming year.
