NJASC Advisors Update - October 15, 2009
Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events...
It was a great Fall Conference - were YOU there?
Nearly 1500 students from over 100 middle and high schools came to The College of New Jersey for the 2009 NJASC Fall Business Meeting. Some highlights...
OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS HONORED...
Lauren Van Hook of South Brunswick High School was honored as the 2009-2010 NJASC Advisor of the Year. Lauren has been an active advisor in both her school and NJASC for the past six years. In addition to working with student leaders to develop and maintain an outstanding Student Council program in her own school, she has also advised two State Officers - Jen Luck in 2008 and Samantha Berk in 2009.
Linda Rohrer of Cherokee High School was honored as the 2009-2010 Administrator of the Year. Linda has been Principal for nine years, serving with distinction as an educational leader for her school community while supporting Student Council and the many student leaders of her school.

REAL INSPIRATION AND AMAZEMENT PROVIDED...
Keynote speaker Keith Hawkins brought his message of Real Inspiration all the way from California. He entertained all in attendance while driving home the major importance of respect, values, and character in becoming a true leader that people will actually follow. His presentation was real and straight from the heart, and clearly moved the students and advisors in attendance to make positive changes in their lives and their school. CLICK HERE to visit Keith's website and learn more about this dynamic young speaker. Who knows, you may want him to come and speak to your school...
After Keith's keynote, mentalist/hypnotist Brian Imbus amazed attendees with his demonstration of the power of the mind within us all. He has performed all over the world for over fifteen years, and shared his talents as a certified hypnotist with the student leaders of New Jersey. While his presentation entertained, it also showed how important the mind can be in effecting positive change.

IMPORTANT BUSINESS CONDUCTED...
At several breakout sessions, student leaders and their advisors learned more about NJASC programs and opportunities for them and their schools...
- Running For State Office - student leaders from the southern counties of our state attended this workshop, taking the first step toward possibly becoming a 2010 NJASC State Officer.
- Standards of Excellence - students and advisors learned more about the most prestigious award offered by NJASC, which combines recognition of excellence with self and peer evaluation of council activities and programs.
- Advisors' Workshop - Keith Hawkins shared more "real inspiration" and his powerful message with the advisors of our state following his keynote address. All advisors in attendance received 2 Professional Development hours.
- State Charity Workshop - representatives from the Family Reach Foundation presented information about their worthy cause and encouraged the student leaders of our state to support our 2009-2010 NJASC State Charity in the coming year.
- RSVP - Christine and Ray Arszulowicz spoke to a packed room about the "Raising Student Voice & Participation" program, sponsored by the National Association of Student Councils. We are hoping to conduct training sessions for interested schools in the coming year to grow the presence of RSVP in New Jersey.
For those of you that attended, we hope that you had an enjoyable and educational experience. For those of you unable to attend, we hope that you will take advantage of our next conference, the 2010 Winter Convention to be held on Wednesday January 6, 2010. Stay tuned for more details!
NJASC Winter award programs underway!
Now that the Fall Business Meeting is behind us, it is time to start working on your applications for several awards that will be presented at the NJASC Winter Convention in January...
Will YOUR school be among those that receive one or more of the following awards at our next state conference?
HONOR SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL
- CLICK HERE for an application form, which is due to Middle Level Representative Madison Brown by Wednesday November 24.
There is an important change regarding the Honor School award this year. Traditionally, if a school missed this award for one year their "count" was reset to zero. The 2009 State Officers voted to change this policy going forward, so that a school's "count" will not reset to zero unless they miss the award for three consecutive years. They also voted to extend this policy to allow schools that had their "count" reset due to missing the award in one of the past three years (2007, 2008, or 2009) to recapture their prior count if they apply for and win the award this coming year (2010).
For more information, please CLICK HERE to download a copy of our new policy with regard to the Honor School award, including a list of schools that are eligible to have "counts" restored.
