NJASC Advisors Update - January 11, 2010

Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events...

Winter Convention 2010 - A great day at TCNJ!

We would like to thank the over 1900 students and advisors that joined us for the 84th annual NJASC Winter Convention on Wednesday January 6 at The College of New Jersey. The day started with campaigning on the first floor of the Brower Student Center, as the candidates for 2010 State Office worked hard to meet their fellow student leaders and seek their votes. As always, this was an exciting experience - both for the candidates themselves and the other student leaders in attendance.

At the General Session keynote speaker Alvin Law entertained, educated, and inspired all those in attendance with his life story. He confronted us to put into perspective the challenges we face, become more connected in our relationships with other people, consider the consequences of our current beliefs/attitudes and how they can affect our lives, and to create a stronger sense of harmony and respect for each other. He is proof positive that we can overcome obstacles, and turn them into personal and professional strengths.

Also at the General Session awards were given for Honor School Student Councils, Top Ten Projects, as well as the High School and Middle Level Student Leaders of the Year. We would like to congratulate all the award winning schools and students. For a complete listing of award winners and several photographs, please visit the following pages on the NJASC website:

Starting a new tradition, advisors were recognized for long time dedication to student leaders in their school with Advisor Service Pins for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30+ years. Since this was the first year of the program, all advisors with 5-9 years of experience received a 5 year pin, 10-14 years of experience received a 10 year pin, etc. In future years, we will award a pin when an advisor attains each five year milestone. We encourage advisors to wear their new Service Pins to future NJASC events, and show pride in their experience guiding the student leaders of our state.

At the Breakout Sessions that followed, each candidate for State Office gave their campaign speech to the Student Council Presidents who then cast their votes for the 2010 State Officers. Meanwhile, student leaders from all over New Jersey conducted workshops to share the great ideas and programs going on in their schools with their fellow leaders from throughout the state. We would like to thank each of the schools, advisors, and students that conducted one or more workshops for their contribution to this important part of our Convention.

At the Advisors Luncheon, our outgoing State Officers recognized their advisors for all their assistance and guidance over the past year. The 2010 NJASC Advisory Board was also elected, the members of which will be:

  • Barbara Meyrick (Buena Regional HS)
  • Cheryl Bostock (Palmyra MS)
  • Christine Nelson (Mount Olive Hills HS)

Christine will serve a two-year term represeting High School advisors from the North, and Cheryl will serve a one-year term representing Middle Level advisors. Barbara was elected last year, and is now entering the second year of her term representing High School advisors from the South. We look forward to working with Barbara, Cheryl, and Christine in the coming year as we seek advice from them with regard to matters relating to advisors.

Finally, in the closing session the 2009 State Officers were thanked for their hard work in the past year - as they announced their successors...

Congratulations to the 2010 State Officers!

The following student leaders from the Northern section of our state were elected to the 2010 NJASC Executive Board, and are pictured below:

  • President - Stephen Desilets, Shawnee HS
  • Vice President - Samantha Campbell, Shore Regional HS
  • Secretary - Aisya Wilson, Burlington Township HS
  • Treasurer - Nick Nahrwold, Palmyra HS
  • Executive Member (Charity) - Sergio Ingato, West Windsor-Plainsboro HS South

We look forward to working with these student leaders over the next twelve months. They will meet with the outgoing 2009 State Officers at Somerville High School on Monday February 8 for the annual changeover meeting. At that meeting, they will decide on the state theme for 2010 and begin their work as your State Officers for the coming year.

We would like to commend all the candidates that ran for 2010 State Office. Student leaders in the northern section of our state (Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, Warren) should thinking about a run for 2011 State Office - a good first step is to attend LTC or LTC 2 (see below)...

Get your student leaders energized at LTC 2010!

Our 55th NJASC Leadership Training Conference (LTC) will be at The College of New Jersey - Session 1 from (Wed-Sat.) July 14-17 and Session 2 from (Sun-Wed.) July 18-21. In four days and three nights, your student leaders will discover, develop, and demonstrate their leadership potential and have a great time doing it. The lessons last a lifetime, and your students will come back energized to positively impact your student council and school.

Last year, we successfully implemented the "LTC 2" program that enabled student leaders to return to LTC for more advanced leadership training. This year, LTC 2 will be expanding to BOTH sessions so that we can accomodate the increased number of your student leaders that want to come back for more of the unique LTC experience!
