NJASC Advisors Update - February 9, 2012

Here is the latest news about what is going on in your state Student Council association, and what you need to know for our upcoming events. Click on each headline below to read the full story...

On Monday February 6, your 2011 State Officers met one last time at Somerville High School to conclude their work at the annual NJASC Executive Transition meeting. We would like to personally thank each of these outstanding student leaders and their advisors for all they have done over the past year to exemplify and support student leadership in our association and throughout our state. Not only did they accomplish a lot, but they had a lot of fun doing it and worked together extremely well as a board. They have set a very high bar for the nine student leaders that will now follow in their footsteps...

In their final official act, the 2011 State Officers voted 2010 Vice President Samantha Campbell onto the NJASC Board of Trustees to serve a one-year term, replacing 2010 President Stephen Desilets who served in this capacity last year. You can CLICK HERE to view our Board of Trustees and Bylaws of Incorporation. We wish each of our 2011 State Officers well in their future endeavors, and look forward to seeing them again at the Spring Awards Program at Six Flags Great Adventure this coming May. For more information about this, one of the largest Student Council events in the nation, read on...

Meanwhile, your 2012 State Officers have officially begun their work! Led by new State President Rachel Yee (Rancocas Valley Regional HS) and Vice President Teresa Campbell (Shore Regional Hills HS), they conducted their first Executive Meeting and selected as their theme "NJ has SWAG - Students Working, Achieving Greatness".

We look forward to working with this dynamic group of student leaders in the coming year as they seek to "Achieve Greatness". You can CLICK HERE to visit the Executive Board section of the NJASC website and learn more about your new State Officers.

The 2012 NJASC Spring Awards Program will be held on Thursday May 10 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson. Each year nearly five thousand student leaders and their advisors come together to recognize excellence in Student Council programs, outstanding community service, and donations to the NJASC State Charity. Awards that will be given at this year's program will include:
  • Standards of Excellence - schools involved in this program are currently working with each other to evaluate and share ideas to improve their Student Council programs.
  • Community Smile - the application form for this award will be posted in early March. Be sure to download the form and complete it to have your Student Council recognized for the service it provides to your school and local community.
  • State Charity Awards - there will be awards for the $1000, $2000, $5000, and $10,000 Club as well as the top three donations by middle and high schools to our 2011-2012 State Charity, "Good Grief". CLICK HERE to visit their website and learn more about this worthy organization.
  • Freda Marden Award - to any retiring advisor from a member school that has 25 or more years of experience. If you are an advisor from a current member school that will be retiring this year with 25 or more years of service as an advisor, please contact Wendy at wbsitzler@njasc.org as soon as possible.

Please understand that we are locked into this date because of NJ ASK State Testing in the middle schools. We are fully aware that there will be a conflict with at least one AP testing date, but we simply cannot schedule this event to coincide with State Testing at any grade level (6-12) that our association serves. Please also understand that we cannot schedule this event any later in May due to regular operating season conflicts with Six Flags as well as a number of proms/formals that take place in many high schools during the second half of May and into June.

IMPORTANT: There is a differential registration rate for member vs. non-member schools at each of our seasonal conferences. Schools that do not register online and pay for their 2011-2012 Membership will be charged $5.00 more per student registrant.

Therefore, if you have not registered and paid your NJASC Membership for 2011-2012, we strongly encourage you to do so NOW! You can use the link below to access our online membership form.

We invite your student leaders to join us this summer for the 57th annual NJASC Leadership Training Conference (LTC)!

This signature event, the oldest of its' kind in the nation and premiere student leadership training experience in New Jersey, will take place at The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township. As in past years, there will be two sessions of LTC offered in different calendar weeks - Session 1 will be from (Wed-Sat.) July 11-14 and Session 2 will be from (Sun-Wed.) July 15-18.

In four days and three nights, your student leaders will discover, develop, and demonstrate their leadership potential and have a great time doing it. The lessons learned will last a lifetime, and your students will come back energized to positively impact your student council and school. The leadership and life skills they will learn at LTC will also prepare them for success in college and beyond.

LTC is not just for Student Council - we actively encourage student leaders from your school's athletic teams, clubs/activities, National Honor Society, class office, and anyone else interested in discovering or developing their leadership skills to join us tis July for a leadership experience they will never forget!

We also invite your High School student leaders who have already attended LTC to come back this year for "LTC 2". We will again be offering this outstanding program in both sessions, and encourage your experienced student leaders to return for advanced leadership training that will take them - and your student council - to the next level! We also invite graduating Seniors in the Class of 2012 to come back for LTC 2, which will give them a running start in their transition from success in high school to success in college and beyond!

The registration cost for LTC 2012 remains only $399.00 for four days and three nights of a leadership experience like no other. Yes, there is NO PRICE INCREASE and at just under $100.00 per day including all expenses (lodging, meals, etc.) LTC is a incredible bargain! You can CLICK HERE to view actual testimonials from student leaders that attended LTC 2011 last summer, many of whom will soon be making plans to return for "LTC 2" this coming year.

The 2012 NASC National Conference is returning to a host school! Nearly one thousand student leaders and their advisors from throughout the nation will come together to share a unique leadership experience that promises to be invigorating and exciting. The 2012 State Officers will lead our New Jersey state delegation to this annual event and we are inviting you to join them (and us) for this special trip, which will be from Friday June 22 to Wednesday June 27.

This conference offers an opportunity to meet and network with other leaders from across the United States, obtain new ideas from informative speakers and workshops, and explore innovative ideas about service learning. It is on this trip that we discover many of the speakers that we bring back to New Jersey for the Fall Business Meeting and Winter Convention. You and your student leaders will come away with renewed enthusiasm for student council involvement as well as new projects and ideas to implement, thereby developing stronger leadership skills and friendships.

More information about our delegation trip to this conference is now available, use the links below...

At this time we are asking that anyone interested in joining our state delegation please e-mail Lou at lmiller@njasc.org with their intent by Wednesday February 29. A $400.00 deposit per person is due to Lou at the Northern Office by Wednesday February 29. Please note that any student who is not a State Officer MUST be accompanied by their advisor or another teacher or administrator from their school and/or district. If you have any further questions about our trip to the 2012 NASC National Conference, please contact Lou at the above e-mail address.

We have already heard of several successful events throughout New Jersey in support of Good Grief, our 2011-2012 State Charity. With spring approaching, we know that many of you are planning to conduct such events in the near future. With this in mind, here are some imporant reminders regarding State Charity donations:

  • All donation checks must be made PAYABLE TO NJASC; please note that any donations that are made payable or paid directly to Good Grief will not be counted toward State Charity award totals for your school or the overall state donation.

  • If you have a donation that must be sent to us after this deadline and would like to make a pledge commitment, you must contact Wendy prior to April 30 to ensure that a plaque will be ready in time for the Spring Awards Program.
